Dealers These are the factory dealerships in the Triangle. Normally these will all do repairs and supply parts and accessories. Most will also sell used bikes.
Barnett's Suzuki Center Inc. 1509 Lake Wheeler Rd Raleigh, NC 27603 (919) 833-5575 Makes: Suzuki, Ducati, Moto Guzzi. Comments: "Just thought you should know Barnett's Suzuki is NOT competitive on prices! They quoted me a price nearly $600 over MSRP. I'm pricing the Suzuki Bandit 1200, which I can get for $100 less than MSRP of $6999 from Sanford, out the door. Barnetts quoted me something like $7600, then pushed the extended warranty, so it came to $8000 out the door, cash. The guy won't make it worth your while to trade in either." "They are quite concerned about looking after their customers, and the way they've treated me has been nothing short of wonderful. They seem to like to build a relationship with their customers. I really trust their service department to be honest (they tell me what *doesn't* need doing, and often find cheaper and/or quicker ways of keeping my bike on the road) and I trust them to work on my bike. The only down side is that they don't deal much on new bike prices. I support them whenever I can, even if I'm paying more than mail order prices... and on *some* goods their price is within a few bucks of mail order.""Because of distance, I don't get a chance to get there much, but when I do, I have always been able to get someone's attention. I have bought bikes from them before (although it has been a good number of years). Tech knowledge concerning Suzuki's and Ducati's is quite good ... and parts inventory is excellent. Many may not know this, but if you are distant from Barnett's or your schedule does not coincide with their hours, you can call them, tell them what you want and they will UPS the parts to you ... So I have no problem with them ... I can't speak about Guzzi parts, service and tech skills.""I trust Barnett's to be straightforward, even if they do charge list. And Barnett's always either has parts or tries very hard to get them in ASAP if we need them quickly." Used Bikes: Usually a small selection, but bikes will be in excellent shape as they check them over carefully (and fix if necessary) before putting them on the lot.
Fox Suzuki/Kawasaki 1439 Durham Road 501 South Roxboro 336-599-3787Makes: Suzuki, Kawasaki Comment: "Good selection of accessories, friendly, non-pushy atmosphere. On the few bikes we've had them quote, their prices were very good, often below list. Worth a call, probably, if you're looking at a suzook or a kawa.""I had an opportunity to visit this place last weekend and make no mistake, this is a serious bike shop a few miles south of downtown Roxboro near the HardTimes diner. A Suzuki/Triumph/Kawaski dealership with lots of bikes, inexpensive leather jackets and a decent amount of accessories and a requisite compliment of used bikes. A must stop if you are shopping around for any of these brands, especially Triumph. A very friendly place with a large following."
Honda Suzuki of Sanford Hwy. 87 S. Sanford, NC 1-800-951-3638 (919) 775-3638 Makes: Honda, Suzuki. Comment: Seems to be a nice place, good straightforward folks who know what they're doing."I was very impressed with the customer support . . . They went out of their way to make it easy for me, and the price I paid was very good indeed. Every time I've gone back there I've been treated extremely well." Used Bikes: A decent selection of bikes. Rocky is the used bike salesman, and he's a good low-pressure guy. The prices are excellent, and the bikes seem to be in good shape.
Honda Yamaha of Raleigh (Team Power Sports) 222 E US 70 Hwy Garner, NC 27529 (919) 772-7866 Makes: Honda, Yamaha. Comment: Historically, HYoR has been not so well liked by most Denizens. Typically considered to have a bad attitude toward the customer. Can't avoid the salesdroids. However, there reputation over the last few months has definitely improved. There is an excellent selection of accessories and clothing. The service department is much better than you would think from looking at the sales side. Another positive note: they loaned a 250cc bike to a Denizen so she could do her DMV test. The addition of Harry Dawson, a long-time Goldwing "expert", has enhanced their abilties, too."Chalk me up as another satisfied customer of TPS (HYoR). I bought the Shadow there, and they were very helpful in fixing the bum tire I went round and round with 751 about. The mechanic rode it, agreed with what I was saying, and put the tire on a spin balancer to see the deformation. He then marked it with chalk, and put on a new tire. I took the chalked tire back to 751 and exchanged it under warranty, but got not so much as a "sorry we didn't catch that." I wouldn't even take a rat bike there now.""I found all of the staff friendly and conversational and more than willing to spend time chatting assuming they are not crowded with customers. The service department is very responsive. I have had no unexpected delays in getting my bike serviced. Most of my dealings have been with Harry Dawson and Gill Langston. If they are representative of the caliber of the rest of the service department, then HYoR is worth your service business. Both Harry and Gill have taken time to chat and Gill particularly has been generous with his time "off the bike" to talk technical matters and bikes in general. Overall I have found the staff friendly and conversational even when they know you are not there to buy a bike. The exception, of course, is when they have people there to buy bikes. Then they are doing "their job" and trying to make a living. Pricing is, as would be expected, retail. They have surprised me on occasion. They were willing to shave about 15% off Corbin's price for my Valkyrie seat. They even held my stock seat and pillion for a couple of weeks until I could cage over to pick it up. The accessories areas has improved tremendously, since I became a regular customer there in March, 1996. I have ordered a number of items through them which, typically, came in within a week. They are a little lax on calling to tell you your stuff is in. Some of the staff are more diligent than others -- Pat in the GoldWing section gets kudos here. Considering the problem with Mariah, the staff in total has been very supportive and forthright in their dealings in the matter, I'd have to give them high marks for their integrity.""Once again, on Saturday I found myself patronising this dealership.
Sharon and I dropped in there before a *long* ride in the wonderful
weather, for her to pick up MSF information, and for us both to browse
around. Jamie was, as usual, delighted to see us -- but more than that,
everyone else on the staff was friendly, cheerful, polite, and
non-intrusive.
This post is really to say that HYoR has made the transition (IMHO) from
a dealership to be avoided to a dealership to be supported. I will
definitely be dropping in there frequently, and no doubt buying stuff
there too. :-)
One thing that really impressed me is the range of inventory. Helmets
from XS to XXXL in stock. Decent prices. Lotsa cool stuff.
As for us, well we picked up a Fog Shield, two pairs of thermal socks
(wonderful!), and Sharon found a superb pair of gloves -- AGV's Imola
glove. We chatted with Jamie, cruised the bikes, kibbitzed with other
folks, and generally had an all-around good time."
Used Bikes:
A very good selection of bikes, but potential problems may be covered
up or ignored rather than fixed. Take an experienced friend. Prices
are very negotiable.
Kawasaki/Suzuki of Durham 2422 US Highway 70 Ease Durham, NC 27703 (919)688-7999 Makes: Kawasaki/Suzuki Comments: "Off of highway 70 between Raleigh and Durham strikes me a typical "wants to sell you a bike" dealership. Lots of floor/shop space. Normal amount of used bikes and the requisite amount of basic accessories. No bad reports of any kind and seems like a good dealer ... just seem like the kind of place that you don't want to spend an hour hanging around unless you are choosing a bike."
Mattison Motorsports 9500 Durant Rd Raleigh, NC 27614 Phone: 919.844.7177Makes: ATK, BMW, Triumph, Honda Comment: Used to be called "Scooterville." Has a Triumph Daytona 900 demo bike that they seem to be very happy to lend out. They have gone out of their way to help at least one Denizen with a clutch cable problem: "making an ca. 60 mile round-trip to trailer my clutch-cabley challenged bike back to the shop after hours. There was no charge for this service!"Comment: Established in 1995 as Mattison Motorsports on S. Sounders St. Sold BMWs, Triumphs, Aprilias, Bimota, & Laverda. Became a Yamaha shop and moved to the old Reward Yamaha shop on Glenwood. Sold the BMW part (now Capital BMW Motorcycle). In 2002, moved to Durant Rd.Comment: Coming on 2 years ago now, I was driving down 70 and I saw a red Triumph Daytona 1200 in the used biked area at Matison. I knew nothing about the dealer as I was new to the area and hadn't met any local riders yet. I stopped in and asked about the bike. I learned that it had been there for over a year and they had very litle interest in it to that point, and that the asking proce was $7299, but they were willing to deal. This was on a Thursday, and I didn't have time to spend as I was at lunch from work. I was there for maybe 10 minutes. That Saturday, I went back to the dealer at apporximately 11am. I took the bike for a test ride, and it was great. The only issue was a clunk in the forks under hard braking, and it wasn't the steering head bearings,it was low in the fork. I demonstrated this by letting the clutch out a bit to move then grabbing the brake, and the owner said he heard it. He told me not to worry, that they would certainly make sure it was right before I took delivery if I wanted the bike. So, after much going abck and forth to the sales manager-style wrangling, I ended up at $6500 out-the-door. Sold. They said that it had a recent service and needed no attention, so if I wanted to ride it away they'd give it a once-over and off I'd go. I reminded him of the fork and he said that the guys had looked at it while we were talking (they did) and proclaimed that it was nothing serious and I could safely ride it if I wanted to, and they would make an appt. for me to bring it back to fix it. So, at approximately 12:30 I rode away on my I-always-wanted-one-of-these Daytona. I am pointing out the times because this is the easiest $$ that place ever made...I was in and out of there and *poof* they have my $6500 and I have a bike. Anyway, on Monday, I see that there is an ad on Cycletrader for the bike, and it's advertised as $6299 OTD. This is strike one. I know they are under no obligation to point this out to me, but it is underhanded and alone would be enough for me not to want to go back. they made it seem like it was a big deal to get down to $6500 and made me negotiate for an hour. If I had called off that ad I woulda saved $200 and had no haggling. I made the service appointment and brought it in. The guy calls me the next day and says "The problem was the speedo cable hitting the fender. It's all set." I know this is crap, but I have arranged a ride and am forced to pick it up. When I got there nobody was around to talk to except parts guys, so I left. Strike 2: incompetent service people. I brought it back again, and this time the ex-service mgr from his BMW shop is there...btw this guy is cool and knowledgable. He checked the head bearings just in case, and then did research. He said that the culrpit was a bad bushing in the fork leg. He had found mention of this somewhere (I don't remember where) and sd they would have to rebuild the forks to fix it. I said "have at it, the boss told me it would be fixed." About an hour later, the owner (I forget his name now) calls me at work to say he's not going to fix the forks. We argue and he says, and I quote, "Look, just because there's a little sound in the forks when you do stoppies in my parking lot doesn't mean I'm going to rebuild your whole front end for free...I'm trying to run a business here!" Stoppies?!? I was going maybe 1.5 mph when I had demonstrated it to him before. Strike 3: Owner is extremely unresonable and exhibits no concern for customer satisfction or the information supplied by his own service dept. Conclusion: If they treat me like that after I buy a bike for more than they are asking, a bike that has been sitting there for a year, and buy it with an absolute minimum of hassle and time investment, how will they treat you? Now for the emotion: I wouldn't cross the street to pee on that place if it were on fire.Comment: 1) "Fixed" bike by replacing speedo with another one that had more miles on it, and didn't tell owner. 2) Slashed rear tire taking it out of the packaging. Refused to replace it when noticed because bike had already left the shop. Used Bikes: Not many.
Metro Motorsports 530 S MCDOWELL ST RALEIGH, NC 27601 (919) 833-3050
Ray Price Harley-Davidson Inc 1126 S. Saunders St Raleigh, NC 27603 (919) 832-2261 Makes: Harley-Davidson, Buell. Comment: Variable staff, some good folks there. Possibly the best selection of new Harleys on the floor in the area, seem to carry some weight with the factory. Used Bikes: A good selection, priced as high as the market will stand.
Triangle Cycles 4503 Chapel Hill Blvd Durham, NC (919) 489-7478 Makes: Honda, Yamaha Comments: "Good selection of new Hondas and Yamahas as well as some new previous year models for sale. Service is adequate for basic services, but quite impresonal and experience indicates that you best have everything itemized before signing a blank service order form. The parts/accessory department is a redeeming aspect of Triangle Cycles. Not that it is heavily stocked (although they do have your basic common maintenance parts for most late model Hondas and Yamahas, some helmets (AGV, Shoei, etc.) some leather jackets and bags and some low-end riding suits), but they are willing to order just about any part or accessory within a few days. ""I have high hopes for this long standing bike shop, at first blush, the new management has done wonders for the place ... the parts folks have always been very good and its nice to go to a place that remembers your name. Because it is close to me, I get all of my OEM parts there and most of the time they are in stock. Large number of bikes ... a decent emphasis on dirt and DP bikes/accessories and increasing inventory of street products. Jury is still out on service ... looks like about the same service folks. Guess we are going to have to get someone to report on their current service work/policies/practices."Used Bikes: Some selection and at times they do have some very good models on consignment. Prices are high for used bikes with very little lettitude for negotiation.
Independent Shops Although independent, several of these shops specialise in particular types of bikes. Normally these will all do repairs and supply parts and accessories. Many of them also sell used bikes.
American Motorcycle Masterpieces Business 64, Wendell NC. Located just east of the bus 64 and 231 intersection in Wendell. 366-1774 Makes: Mostly Harley, S&S Comments: "Lou builds customs from the ground up. He has lots of chrome on the walls, clothing, helmets, etc. Runs a heck of a service/repair business, and is nice guy. Even though I ride a Kaw Vulcan, I buy lots of sparkle parts from him to hack on my scoot." Used Bikes: Occasionally has used bikes
Capitol Cycle Supply 4480 Poole Rd, Raleigh, NC 27610-3007 Phone: (919)212-2112 Makes: All. Comment: Decent place for aftermarket parts and accessories. They have been known to make a deal for cash. When buying a bike there, keep in mind that "the owner is fond of $200 "documentation" fees and can be extremely condescending to women," according to one Denizen. Used Bikes: Good selection, all very well presented. They are proud of a reputation for selling good bikes.
Carolina Custom Motorcycles 2712 S. Saunders St Raleigh, NC 27603 phone: 919.833.0085 fax: 919.883.0066 "Specializing in Chroming, Polishing, and Accessories" Used bikes: there is one bike on the floor - I don't know if its for sale or for advertisement - so folks will know that it is a moto business"

Performance Cycle Works High Performance Parts & Service 3703 Old NC HWY. 49 Asheboro, NC 27203 Tues-Fri 9-6 Sat 9-2 Jimmy Ridge, Owner 336-636-5311 fax 336-636-5311Directions: 64 to Asheboro, then head 49 south out of Asheboro. Less than a mile down 49 south, exit to the right toward "Farmer". The shop will be a couple miles down on the left. It's a gray cinder block building. One Denizen writes: "I have been by it many times now on my way back and forth to where I keep my horses in Denton, but never got a chance to stop until the other day. They appear to cater mostly to the Jap bike drag crowd, but they do a little of everything. They stock Pirelli, Metzler, and Avon tires, and will order anything else you might want. He says he can meet any mail order tire price except on Dunlops. If you buy tires from him, they are $20 to mount and computer balance per tire. If you bring your own in, they are $25 each. I ordered a set of ME-Z4s for the VFR (being that those and the Z4 race are the only tires that come in the proper size for the VFR800). The guy who owns the place said he worked for 25 years as a mechanic at a Honda dealership. He has another guy working there at least, and I think two guys. The wife does the bookkeeping and such."
Reward Cycle 9010 Glenwood Avenue Raleigh, NC 27612 (919)781-7511 (800)499-3580Specialty: Yamaha, Bimota and ATK dealer, but has most makes available. Comments: Reward Cycle is the area's leading dealership for used sportbikes. They specialize in used Japanese and Italian sportbikes. They are also an authorized dealer for Bimota (exotic) and ATK (dirtbikes). They will special order accessories for a nominal charge, and stock Dainese leathers, Shoei Helmets, and other high-end items. In addition to bikes, they have a full service department with a DynoJet dynamometer. Bill Moon is the head mechanic. Jetting and performance is assured by the Moon Tune (tm). The shop has several #1 Racing plates, both nationally and regionally. They also have two dirtbike experts on the staff (one a former factory racer) Recently they had in stock a Bimota, a KTM Duke, two ATKs, two Ducatis, two Harleys, a VFR400RR and a bevy of japanese sportbikes."I have visited them often and there are a lot of new and used bikes to choose from, help is easy to acquire and part availability is good ..will order what you want. I have had bikes serviced there before, but not recently. Nice place to visit." Used Bikes: Many used bikes available. At last check, they had mainly higher displacement (750) sportbikes, plus a few used Ducatis and a few standards.
751 Motor Sports 4855 NC Hwy. 751 Apex, NC 27502 (919) 362-1751 Specialty: Comments: "Their prices are a little better than other shops, but there work is only ok. They put a tire on my 96 900RR that would deform at speed and vibrate. After three trips back, chain adjustments and rebalancing, they refused to admit a problem. So I took it to HYoR. The mechanic rode it, agreed with what I was saying, and put the tire on a spin balancer to see the deformation. He then marked it with chalk, and put on a new tire. I took the chalked tire back to 751 and exchanged it under warranty, but got not so much as a "sorry we didn't catch that." I wouldn't even take a rat bike there now.""Gary is alive and well. His partner, Jim left last fall leaving no mechanic and dim prospects for the store. Gary got his inspection license and picked up a mechanic named Charles who used to work on British Cars. Gary still has an encyclopedic knowledge of any bike made before 1985. He still mail orders and where else can you walk out with any part off a used Honda?" "Seem to be pretty good. Extremely knowledgable about Bridgestone tires. Excellent prices on gear -- helmets are much cheaper here than in Raleigh. Gary, the guy who runs the place, is a good guy, although his manner has been known to put a few denizens off. The shop work is good and not very expensive in the scheme of things. the mechanic, Jim, is very knowlegeable and fast. if you work it right, they can even do work while you wait. The surroundings are suitably funky, since the shop is in an old house on 751 about seven miles south of i-40. The place is worth the drive. They have used parts and some used bikes (more expensive than classifieds but less than other shops). Accessories are near-mail-order on most items. Get gary off on a tangent and you'll kill an hour, easy. A great place frequented by many denizens."Used Bikes: Some.

Wayne's World of Motorsports 402C Hardee Street (behind the bowling alley) Durham 682-1346 Makes: services all makes, sells a few used bikes, deals in some accessories. Comment: "Wayne is a one-man operation who has been in business for several years. I've bought accessories from him before, but never had work done there. He seems like a great guy, and came highly recommended second-hand. If anyone uses him, we'd appreciate more information."
Visious Cycles North Roxboro Road Durham, NC 27704 (919)477-7007 Owner: Doug About a 15% discount for TriDoD members.Makes: Carries used bikes on consignment.Comments: "What he doesn't carry in stock...he's more than willing to find and order. Does good work at a good price.""For a new shop, Doug Walters appears to be doing well. As on TriDoD pointed out, Doug is not a morning person, but does stay open past 6pm. Since he uses mostly part time repair folks (a couple work at other shops), they often do repair work after regular store hours. He is selling used bikes that he buys and fixes for sale .. and also sells bikes on consignment. Prices for parts are very good, but he has a very, very small inventory .. mostly what he bought into when he purchased the place from Doug Taylor. I don't see the inventory improving anytime soon ... because of the cost issue. The nice thing about this place is it is becoming the kind of place that you can come visit, sit around looking through catalogs and ordering what you want. Doug is going to concentrate on his service and accessory ordering as well as used bike selling."

Freelance Mechanics Gary Medlin (919)233-1625Comments: "He is arguably the best mechanic in town...and he is a genuinely nice guy. If anything, his rates are too reasonable. IMHO he undervalues his work. Like Toufic says, if you've got time to talk and you need some bike work done, give Gary a call. "
Mail-Order In general, most of us believe in the philosophy of buying locally if reasonable -- keep the good dealers in business! But this is not always possible or desirable. Of the catalogues, we have this to say: Dennis Kirk does a good job of getting the order right and getting it out fast. Some denizens are a bit put-off by their multiple-price policy...and their prices can be higher than other mail-order places.Nationwide cycle. Prices and service are excellent. Ask for Steve. http://www.nationwidecycle.comKiernan racing. Deliveries are fast, prices and people good. http://www.braincell.com/kiernan/ Despite some glitches with Chapparel, they're OK. They were good at handling a customer service, after-the-order screw up on one order, and got everything perfect on a second. As for Motorcycle Accessory Whorehouse, they have a ton of products and their prices are good, but forget service. Competion Accessories is known for screwing up orders and back-orderng stuff without telling you and generally being rude on the phone to customers. Listed below are other mail-order places we've found to be useful:

Pretty amazing."Starne's Welding Starnes is located off of Chapel Hill Drive in Raleigh. Start on Hillsboro Street going towards Cary. Eventually the road will split. One lane will continue on straight, and another will turn to the left and go under a bridge. Go straight. I don't remember the name of the road you have to turn left on, but it's right there by State Surplus. A big dirty pastel yellow building. Looks like a hole in the wall. Whatever you do, don't get confused by the auto parts store and their "Machine Shop" sign. They're not a real machine shop. Go past that to the stop sign and take a right.Comments: "He did a spectacular job, and I'm very impressed with the quality, time, and effort he put into the job. I would recommend this guy to anyone."
