Thank you for adopting a highway! Your contribution to this program will help keep North Carolina's highways clean and beautiful while allowing the money saved to be channeled to more urgently needed maintenance and improvements.
Research conducted by the National Keep America Beautiful organization has shown that people litter:
We believe Adopt-A-Highway will address these reasons by:
Enclosed is a copy of the signed contract and map indicating the stretch of highway you have adopted. Your signs have been ordered and should be installed within the next month.
Also enclosed are pre-addressed Adopt-A-Highway report cards for your use to mail in or you can call the toll free number to report each clean-up. Please complete the report cards or call after each clean-up. We will use the information to evaluate the Adopt-A-Highway program and its value to North Carolina.
These cards or call will also be helpful in providing statistics for news releases, collecting data on the percentage of recyclables in roadside litter and ensuring that both the NCDOT and the adopting groups are honoring their part of the Adopt-A-Highway Agreement.
We also encourage you, while you clean up, to collect recyclable glass and aluminum in separate bags and either sell the recyclables or donate them to local recycling programs.
To get started, call the Durham County Maintenance Office to schedule a time to borrow the videotape on safety regulations as well as to pick up your safety vests and garbage bags. You may also call them to collect and dispose of the filled trash bags, after you complete your clean-up.
Than you again for adopting a section of highway. We hope you are and will continue to be proud of your "adopted area". Keep up the good work to Keep America Beautiful.
